Dear John Key,
My name is Austen and I am in year five at Stonefields School,Auckland
I think that the flag should be changed to the new flag.
I think that it should be changed because the silver fern represents the new Zealand sports teams and our countries. I also think we should have the southern cross because it shows where we are in the world and our position on the globe. I also like the colors. Black because it is the national color and blue because it represent's the blue water and skies.
I also think we should change the flag because it looks too much like Australia's flag. Another reason is out of the 53 people in the commonwealth only four still have the union jack. We are also an independent country and the we have evolved since the current flag was elected.

Dear John Key,
My name is Aashna, I am 10 years old, I am a year 6 from Stonefields School. I sent this letter to you just to give you my opinion around the New Zealand flag. I think that we should change it, I have 3 reasons why.
Firstly, I think the current flag looks to much like Australia's flag and lot's of people from other countries get confused with the flags.
Secondly, I think that we should change the flag since we don't really belong to England anymore.
Thirdly, I think that we should change the flag since the new flag has a black bit that represents heaps of our sports teams like Black Caps, All Blacks, Tall Blacks, Black Ferns, Black Sticks and so on.
That is why I want to change the current New Zealand flag.

Dear John Key,
My name is Cooper and I am a Year 6 in Stonefields School. I am a female and have the best friends that I could ever imagine. I am very curious about your thinkings and your thoughts.
I firstly think that the money that is going to the flag should have gone to charities like cancer or the poor. Secondly I think that we should leave the flag or change it to one of the old flags that would be much better. I also think that you should have listened to us first and gave us a option to change the flag to a new flag or a old flag.
Secondly what I know is that we are changing the flag because it was your decision and you think that it looks like Australia's and it does. I know that you think it is okay to change the flag, Why do you think that ? I also know that there were a bunch of flag entries. How on earth did you narrow it down to 5 ?
Thirdly I wonder if the people who created these flags are taking back what they did and started thinking that the money could have gone to something more then a flag like the people. I also wonder what you John Key was thinking in the first place to waste all that money and a dumb flag that we already have. Did you think wise enough or were you just goofing around? I have so many questions. I Cooper hope you have read this letter personally and not let your helpers do it for you. Please do write back or call me in.

The witch and the Princess By Riley

In Writing we had to illustrate and write a story for the library and for the little kids , we had to plan , write , plan illustrations , illustrate , and then we will have to share , this is my book before we printed it off!
I found it really hard to draw and colour in the pictures, because in some of my pictures there were small gaps and I had to use felt tip and it was big at the end of it, and also I struggled doing it in time for printing.
I think My story is very appropriate, and I commander it for four too 8 year old because it is a fantasy story and it has dragons and princess and everyone likes a good old fantasy story, I think it is a good story for a girl and boys because it has knights , superheros and dragons for boys and it has castles , princess and a king and queen for girls!

In reading we were learning more about the flag referendum so we decided to make our own stonefields school flag, that represents our school, using different symbols,colours and more we then had to describe why we choose these colors, symbols and values and why we put it in our flag!
I think I choose the right colours and symbols to put on my flag.
I struggled finding pictures that looked good and were on labeled for reuse but I finally got there.

Dear John Key,
My name is Jade W, And I go to Stonefields school, I am year four, I kind of know you because you have met my mum Laura Ehlen - W, and I saw you at the fair for kids that are disabled last year with my mum, and I was so excited to see you, and my favourite food is chocolate cake.
I want to change the flag because I know that the old flag just represents New Zealand but the new one represents sport and many cultures.
I love the silver fern on the flag because it connects to sport like the All Blacks and they wear the silver fern on their shoulder for their uniform like the Black Caps.
I think other cities might fight cause the old flag represents a lot of New Zealand and the cities that are in it so they might want a flag that represents their country because the Southern Cross is also just in New Zealand but if they have a different Southern Cross they might want their one so that is why I want to change the flag so it can it represent everything in New Zealand like the silver fern.
I wonder why we always have to change because it's so hard to decide like I actually chose to keep it but then my teacher said the new flag represents sport, cultures and the silver fern so I changed my mind and voted for the new one.
In school we even had a debate and it was a tie so we didn't know which one was going to win outside school.

I chose these learner qualities because they help us get out of the learning pit.
I chose the values because that helps us in our learning and it connects to the learner qualities so they all have their own part of helping kids like for example reflect that can go with apply understanding.
flag referendum process
For the past few weeks we have been learning about the flag referendum. For build knowledge we had to go home and ask our parents if they wanted to change the flag or not, and why?
Then we moved onto make meaning we had to analyse people's comments, like which one we liked the most and which part we agree with. For the other part of make meaning we had to annotate Freya's flag.
For apply understanding we had to make our own flag and annotate it. Then we had to send a letter to John key about whether or not we wanted to change New Zealand's flag.
Finally we had to share our letters to John key and our flag onto the hub blog.
Then we did our private referendum vote for our hub! For the results it was 44% for the old flag and the new flag it was 56%! Some people were happy and some were not because the new flag had more votes than the old flag.

My name is Pativai I am an year 6 and I go to Stonefields School.
I strongly believe we should change the flag because of the three reasons I am going to be explaining.
Firstly I think we should change the flag because it is an original flag of new zealand and no other flag has other colours of designs like us. We should change our flag because of the fern in our flag there is no other flag that has an fern on it. We need an new flag because of our old flag it was simple and when we have our new flag we have an bright colourful new zealand flag.
Secondly I think we should change the flag because of all the culture from new zealand has been put into this flag. I think we should change the flag because of the fern and the colours in the flag for example blue is representing the south pacific. I think the flag should be changed because of it mostly representing new zealand, for an example the fern represents the sport in new zealand.
Thirdly I think we should change the flag because it would be really nice to have an sports sign on our flag now it can represent the fitness and the gold silver and bronze that the spots team has been winning.The flag can represent our old flag too because the blue can maybe in some way represent.
I really think that we should change the flag because of the three reasons that I explained to you.

Dear John Key,
My name is Holly I just moved to Stonefields and im 10-11 years old I love your support for New Zealand and I will talk about how I like and dislike the flags. I just want to say I would like younger people to be able to vote for the flag only because it's gonna be our future flag , The older people voting aren't going to be here much longer and it's gonna be new world with it.
I love the new flag , and how we have black for the New Zealand teams but honestly I don't like it that much because we have had the anzac's march under the New Zealand flag and stand for our Island. I wish we didn't have the old one because it is so bland and kinda old. Honestly I would like a flag with the Fern underneath the Union Jack and the background a lighter blue.
If you had extra money I would say to help the poor by buying a massive plot of land and build a homeless hotel. It will help the street wanderers and maybe there would be less accidents. It will save lives and you will be a very loved Prime Minister.

Dear John Key,
Hi my name is Vera, I am 10 years old and I am a year 6 student from Stonefields school. I am just sending you this letter to give you my perspective around the New Zealand flag.
Firstly, I believe that we should change the New Zealand flag because it looks way too similar to Australia's flag, and some other people around the world sometimes gets confused with the 2 flag.
Secondly, I believe that we should change the flag because we don't follow most of the rules under the british, and that we are not really under the british government anymore.
Thirdly I think we should change the flag because I think it should have the colour black, on the flag because it is our national color, and most of New Zealand's sports team has black in their name.
This is why I believe that we should change the New Zealand Flag.

Today we had to design a flag for our School. first we had to ask our parents about what they think about changing the flag, then we had to annotate someone else's flag that they made. After we had to make a flag for our school. I think I did well at designing the mountain and the rocks, but I found it quite difficult to do the left side of the mountain.

Brooklyn's adventure to my home by Emma.
At school time I got to take Brooklyn home. When Brooklyn and I got home, he got to see sammy the dog.
After that Brooklyn was really excited to see my family that live in my house. Ryan and Lockie who are my two brothers,my Dad, Glenn, Heather my step mother and my cute little dog baxter.
He can sleep with my other toys and read a story called the BFG by Roald Dahl.
After that brooklyn and I had a good night sleep and Brooklyn was very happy.
