The Deer Debate -Isaac S

       The Deer Debate

What Is It About Them?

Deer. We all know them. Antlers, four legs and a stumpy tail. So what is it that makes them cause such a heated debate? Well, in case you didn't know, deer have been the centre of an immense argument between the Department Of Conservation (D.O.C) and the kiwi hunters of NZ for years. The hunters argue that they provide venison to sell overseas, whilst the D.O.C counter this method with their own, saying that "Deer eat native plants and seedlings, and change the format of NZ's forests and bushes. And also they halt the regeneration of native forests and eradicate habitats and food supplies of native animals of all kind."(Edited for reader, pg18 School Journal Part 4 2010)

Another tactic the hunters are using is mentioning that hunting is a way of encouraging kiwi outdoor activity. Deerstalkers believe that hunting is a daily piece in a kiwi lifestyle and that deer should be managed and culled so that survivors are fit and good for hunting. D.O.C replies back with this piece of text: "Tramping, and the acknowledgement and appreciation of native plants and animals in national reserves is also seen as an important recreational activity and enjoyment for many New Zealanders."(Campbell,2010 School Journal Part 4 2010)

The hunters, now desperate and scrabbling for leverage against this argument, hold their ground. Saying that "deer hunting is a tourism industry in New Zealand and brings in valuable money." (Campbell,2010 School Journal Part 4 2010)

Then D.O.C, seeing as the hunters are on their last legs provide a crushing blow. "The flora and fauna of New Zealand is also seen as an even more valuable tourist attraction, providing almost quadruple the money deer hunting can provide."(Campbell,2010 School Journal Part 4 Number 1 2010)

Now personally, I myself am biased in this situation. The hunters provide an amazingly persuasive argument, but so does D.O.C At the moment I am swaying towards the Department Of Conservation, but I have yet to choose my place. Both parties wish to eradicate deer from NZ, but one wants deer to be killed for sport whilst the other wants deer to be killed for the damage they do to native flora. I on the other hand want deer to be safe, and transported back from where they came without the use of hunting or any form of killing.

But I, for one am unable to influence this gigantic argument about the quaint deer in our native bushes and forests, for I require a much larger group of people. Now I ask for your help to join me to transport the deer from where they came peacefully and with the use of violence. What do you think? That's my request for you. -Isaac S
