Austen's Exhibition Reflection

What part of the exhibition am I most proud of?

I am proud of the fact that I put a lot of effort into my work and  I did a lot of research about Cars and pollution. That I Found out predicted experimented, brought my knowledge and  experimented, for Build Knowledge. That I analysed, sorted,  grouped, ordered and compared and contrasted my work , for Make Meaning. That I created, took action ,designed and imagined for Apply Understanding.

What area of graduate profile do you think you have grown the most?

Make Meaning and Building Learning Capacity.
For Building Learning Capacity I used self talk in difficult times and I motivated myself and said "You can do this." I also thought outside of the box and was in learning pit for example when we had a problem I would be in the Learning pit making mistakes and I would think outside the box to get around them. I also used the learner qualities and I thought, wondered, reflected, weakly, connect and I was determined to get it finished. I was also goal driven and determined to finish what I had started.
For Make Meaning I  compared and contrasted the different types of cars to see how they differ and how the stats compare. I also created and designed a solar powered so it can make the future cleaner and reduce global warming it also helps the environment. I also problem solved with the design of the solar powered car because we did not have the right pieces for the solar powered car so we change the design so we had the right pieces. I also used the learning process to help my with developing my learning.

What feedback did I get from the visitors?

They said they that next time the sign should not be blocking anyone. Also that we should re-do the solar powered car get it right then make a video of it running. Another person said we should find out how pollution affects the world and How the inside of the car works and what is inside it. Another person said that we should draw a diagram of inside the car.

Who would you like to thank for helping you along the way?

I would like to thank every member in my group, Kush, Nuime and Sukhpreet. For helping me with the Cars breakthrough and for gathering all the information and facts that we displayed on the night. I would also like to thank Mr Stuart for help us look for the pieces we need for the solar powered car and getting them and helping us put it together. Finally I would like to thank my mum for supporting me along the way and going out and getting the things we needed.
What part of the exhibition would you have done differently?

I would have done the solar powered car differently because what we needed to do was put the motor where the wheel went so that it could move but we did not so it ended not moving with the solar panel on the back. I also would have done like a booklet or a poster or a film like book roll Containing all the fats in side.

Austen's Tsunami information report

What is a Tsunami?
A Tsunami (Su-na-mee) is a Japanese word for Harbour wave. It can cause a lot of damage when it hits the coast. A Tsunami Is very tall and can travel really fast. When a tsunami hits it can cause billions of dollars in damage and can take years to grow the trees and build the the buildings again.
How is a Tsunami caused?
Tsunamis are normally caused by Underwater volcanic eruptions, Landslides and Earthquakes. When an earthquake occurs the tide retreats and the water rushes in creating energy.  Then the energy makes the water rise above the natural sea level. After that gravity pulls it down which makes it ripple outwards. When a Tsunami is formed by a volcanic eruption which Creates energy and The process is repeated. When the water is rippled it travels towards the coast at speeds of 500 Miles per hour or 700 kilometers per hour.
What happens when a tsunami travels?
When a tsunami is far out to sea it is very difficult to recognize since it moves through the depth of the water. When the wave gets closer to shore an event called wave schooling occurs, the wave still has a lot of energy and nowhere to go so it rises. The wave speed slows down while its height rises to as much as  100 feet.
What is the damage it does?
When a tsunami hits everything in its path is is crushed, broken or washed out to sea. It may flood for 300 meters or more, from the beach. The land is covered in rubbish and dead bodies. Food water and housing are destroyed. Tsunamis do not just drown people near the coast, but level buildings and trees for a mile or more, especially in low-line areas. If that is not enough the water then retreats back, taking back the newly created debris and anything or anyone caught in its way.
What happens after it has hit?
After the tsunami the Survivors have the big task of cleaning up the damage. There is often a lot of dead people so the first job they have to do is bury the dead. Next, they have to find clean water supplies. The water they have has been contaminated by the sea water. New wells will have to be dug or A place to store water from other places. Food is needed too, the Vegetable gardens and animals have suffered like the people. They also need to set up their own shelters, the survivors use anything handy to build them. Scraps of building materials or pieces of salvage can be used.
Who deals with their injuries?
One of the first thing people of aid have to do is provide fresh water. Tents are set up for the Sick and injured and the aid people deal; with their wounds. Their wounds could be from Broken bones, Cuts, bruises or sprained Joints. They have big bag of medical supplies.
How can we avoid a Tsunami?
Scientists and Policymakers are focusing in detecting the tsunami. Measuring underwater pressure and seismic activity. Also they are  establishing many global networks worldwide for quickly distributing alarms and warnings. When you hear the tsunami warnings go inland,  high ground or around it. When nature is too powerful to stop the safest course is to get out of its way.
How have people tried to stop it?
Some people have tried to Make the damage smaller or even stop a tsunami by creating Seawalls, flood gates and channels to divert the water. But these strategies are sometimes not effective
Do you know about dangerous tsunamis?
In 2004 there was a tsunami in the Indian ocean, it was one of the most deadliest tsunamis in history. Killing 200,00 throughout south-Asia. It spread across lots of  countries including Thailand, South Africa, Kenya, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Madagascar, Somalia, Bangladesh and Myanmar  In 2011 a tsunami in japan broke the flood-wall protecting its Fukushima power plant. Causing it to erupt in flames, And cut all the power in the city On December 28, 1908, a tsunami Hit the coast of Italy. It hit only a few minutes after shaking. The 12 meter tsunami destroyed near by coastal areas destroying almost all the structures and killing 70,000 People. The tsunami was caused by an undersea landslide. In total 150,000 People lost their lives.

Austen's Hidden meaning poem

For literacy we had to make a poem with a hidden meaning, can you work out mine?

Austen's Poem about looking through the window.

For literacy we read the poem Journey through stars by Alan Bagnall (SJ P4 N2 2004.)
It is about a boat in the middle of the ocean and the reflection of the stars on the waters surface and About what path you are going to take in your life. We tried to incorporate hidden meaning to our poem like Similes, Rhythm and Metaphor.

Austen's Poem about writing.

My poem about writing. By Austen

You pick up your pencil
grip it tightly in your hand

Sit down, on the chair
beside your own Desk
thinking what to write

Once a bubbling idea
comes into your mind

As bubbling as a bath
full of soapy, soft foam.

Grab your pencil and
write the idea down

When you make a mistake
all you need an eraser to
make it fade out onto paper.
You might want to add some
detailed sketched pictures to
Make it a bit more interesting

As messy as when you
when you are using
charcoal to draw a picture.

All you need a introduction
and conclusion to make
the writing really intriguing

Try to make your story
more interesting than
a parrot talking Japanese.

Do not forget a little
grammar then your
story is nearly Done!

Austen's Recount: Camp with Lucas

E- Asttle Writing - Recount

Write a plan here:
Where- Just north of the bombay hills.
When- 14-16 February
What- Summer camp.
Who- Lucas, Mum, Dad, Lauren and I.
Why- For Explorers club.

Day 1- Going there and doing some activities and settling in.
Day 2- Doing to the do the activities and doing an activity challenge.
Day 3- Packing up and going heading home.

Conclusion- I had a good time at the Explorers camp and I took a risk by going down the flying fox from the top.

Start your writing here:

It was the 14 of February and I was going to pick up my best friend Lucas. We were going to take him on a camp with my Mum, Dad and Sister, The camp was just north of the Bombay Hills and it was going to take some time to get there. When we arrived his mum gave his clothes for the camp and some things to keep him busy as we drove along. Then we began our trip to camp.

Finally 45 minutes later we arrived at camp. We went and met Jessica who is the head of Explorers and she checked us in and showed us where our room was, it was number 56. Then we got all of our things out of the car and we chose what bed we wanted, I chose the top one and Lucas slept beneath me. Then we went into the clubhouse for lunch. We had lunch and played a with the Duplo while the adults had a cup of tea.

After lunch Mum said Lauren, Lucas and I could go out and explore the camp and show Lucas around but we had to stay together. First we showed Lucas around the club house. Then we showed him around the playground. Next we showed him found the up the hill. Finally we showed him the forest with the bonfire where we toasted marshmallows!

Then we went to the playground and over there they also had an obstacle course. We also played tag and manhunt with a few other Explorers members and that was fun we all decided that we wanted to go on some of the activities, so we got changed into our
togs and we met by the post. Then we chose what activities we wanted to do. Fist me and Lucas went on the water slide, I went down back wars and head first.

Then we moved on to the floating pontoons and we did cool tricks of them, like back flips. Then we tried to do the obstacle courses Lucas tried the Easy red level and I did the medium blue level. It was hard  but a lot of fun. We also went kayaking on the lake. We also did the flying fox for the first time, I was so scared but I managed to face my fears and do it! To celebrate we  did the final activity for the day wish was this balancing course.

Afterwards, we had dinner and It was delicious and then we got into our p-jams and went to bed we read a book to end the day it had been a good day and I am glad I faced my fears because the flying fox was awesome. But this was just day one!

To Be Continued………..!

Austen's prompting book report.

Diary of a wild boy: Written by Brando Yelavich.

This was a story about a boy, he was not just any he was a boy who had boring jobs and really unhealthy habits. It was leading him nowhere. At 19 years old, he decided he was going to walk round the entire coast of New Zealand. He decided he was going to because he was on drugs and smoking weed. He did it because he wanted to change his life. On 1 February 2012 he set off from the top of the north island. He had a tent, air rifle, knife and a few other things for his journey. It would take about 600 days for him to go round the whole island. Along the way we would face challenges, hardship, pain and Joy as he was the first person to walk round the entire coast. Sometimes he just wanted to give up other times he wished he had not done it in the first place he also felt very lonely. Either way He still pushed on and was determined to finish. He learnt the true ways of a survivor, an adventurer and lived of the land. It was an interesting book showing a lot of great determination and courage.

Austen's dear dairy into the jaws of death

The BANG! of guns as we scrambled ashore the "Splish, Splash, Splosh" was the sound it made as we went through the water and the salty taste. When we went up the cliff we felt the rough rocks as we scrambled up the rocks. As we were climbing we smelt the fiery smell of the bullet's flew past. When we reached the top we heard the crunch of the shovel as we begin to dig our trenches and when we're exhausted we heard the CLANK!as we climb into our tin houses.

Austen's science week

A day of science

It was a Tuesday morning in the  middle Block and we got told today we were going to be doing some science experiments. Then the teachers asked "Who wants to be a scientist?" My hand shot up at 100 KPH. Then they asked us "What type of Science do you want to study?" I answered "Biology, Zoology and Chemistry. Then we began our experiments.

A few minutes later we began to start the experiments. We started with the experiment Fizz inflator. The ingredients were empty water bottles, vinegar, balloons baking soda, sugar and yeast. To do the experiment first we poured the vinegar into an empty water bottle. Then we stretched the balloon we had, and filled it with a teaspoon of baking soda. Next we carefully attached the neck of the balloon to the neck of the bottle of water. Finally we watched as the chemical reactions and the forces make the vinegar rise and it looked like an eruption and it inflated the balloon, while it also looked quite fizzy. We took a bit of photos and then moved on to our next experiment.

The next experiment we did was dancing raisins. The ingredients were soda, plastic cups and a few raisins. First you pour the soda into the plastic cup. Then we put 6-8 raisins in  the soda. Next they started coming up and down in the cup for a little before they stopped, we also had to record them here's what I wrote: The raisins  were moving up with the carbon-dioxide of the bubbles and when they reached the top the bubbles went down. But they did not do that that well I described them as "They are drowning like old people." We also pretended  that they were on 'Raisins got talent'.  After that we got to drink the soda and eat the raisins.

Then we went on to our final activity the incredible hoop glider. First we had to observe the design and the things the features of the design model plane.I got to help Whea Nin cut the paper strips for the hoops. First we had five minutes to make a small hoop. Then we had five minutes to make a bigger hoop and then we had 10 minutes to put the two hoops onto a straw, it felt like forever but finally we did it. Then we went outside to race them it wasn't easy to see who won, but it I think I came around 6-8 place so I did pretty well.

We're going on a field trip!

Some of the learners from Hub 8 wrote this wonderful letter to ask for permission for a field trip we are planning for our concept learning. It's an awesome sample of collaborative persuasive letter writing.

23 May 2016

Dear Miss Martin,

We are writing to you because we need permission to go to Mission Bay on the 9th of June 2016.

We chose as a hub that collaboration is the learner quality  that we need to work on the most. Then we looked at a range of places and Mission Bay had most the votes, so we decided that we would go to Mission Bay.
The trip is for our concept learning and we believe this trip will strengthen our ability to work collaboratively within a group of people who we usually don't work with. It will also construct new relationships with our fellow classmates.

We are currently collaboratively working on the E.O.T.C, R.A.M’s and the organisation of the transport to Mission Bay, including plan and lastly, a race in the fountain with our mini wakas. We had built these mini-wakas for this specific reason for our concept learning as well.

The things we did to plan to go to Mission Bay were that we had to make a healthy lunch and  decided on what collaborative games we were going to play. Also we went on a  preparational trip to the Wetlands so we know what to expect, here we had practiced playing our own collaborative games.

Once we have your approval we will write and send letters to the parents to inform them of the coming trip. We are really looking forward to getting permission to go to Mission Bay. This will be such a great learning opportunity.

Yours sincerely,

Learning Hub 8.

Dear John Key,

My name is Austen and I am in year five at Stonefields School,Auckland

I think that the flag should be changed to the new flag.

I think that it should be changed because the  silver fern represents the new Zealand sports teams and our countries. I also think we should have the southern cross because it shows where we are in the world and our position on the globe. I also like the colors. Black because it is the national color and blue because it represent's the blue water and skies.

I also think we should change the flag because it looks too much like Australia's flag. Another reason is out of the 53 people in the commonwealth only four still have the union jack. We are also an independent country and the we have evolved since the current flag was elected.

Yours Sincerely
Austen.
