In literacy we have been writing about if people should include insects in their healthy diet, here is my opinion.

People should include insects in their healthy diet.

I strongly believe that people should include insects in their healthy diet. When you think about it seems gross and weird, but aren't you curious of what an insect could taste like? Countries like Thailand, Mexico, China, Brazil, Australia, Japan, The Netherlands, Vietnam etc consider insects in their healthy diet. Insects are healthy, nutritionist and a lot of insects taste like our everyday food.

A lot of people who have tasted insects say that insects taste really yum, tiny scorpions could taste a lot like Beef jerky, giant water bugs can taste like salted banana, Tarantulas tastes like how you would expect a bug to tastes like but the legs taste a bit like chicken wings! Giant crickets tastes like nutty chicken, Sago grub tastes kind of like bacon, Grasshopper tastes like peanut chicken, Crickets taste like popcorn, mealworms taste like roasted nuts, Lemon ants eaten raw taste really sour, stink bugs stink a lot but taste slightly like apples, locus taste similar to shrimp.

Most people have tried peanut butter, and some of the peanut butter in U.S.A contain some insects such as crickets. Most red candies such as skittles can contain crushed abdomens from female, beetle-like african insects! Other lollies or candies such as jelly beans can also contain insects to make the colour really bright and vibrant. Did you know that up to eight bug parts are legally allowed in each chocolate bar, believe it or not some cereals and broccoli can contain insects inside it too. You will eat over 70 insects and 10 spiders while you sleep in your lifetime.

Insects can use 1 L of water to grow and cows, chickens, pigs use more than 100 L of water to grow. Insect also eat less food to grow, than other animals. Insects are easy to live and farm most families can afford it. Farming Insects can take less space to grow, than animals and can keep our environment nice and tidy.

Insects look way healthier and nutritious than you think. Most Insects in the world contains vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre, fat, iron etc. Did you know that some meat and vegetables have less nutritious than insects? A small serve of crickets has more protein than the same serve of beef.

So try get a insect fry it cook or eat raw and discover what it taste like!

For literacy we had to read a piece of writing and comment on the parts where we think their are AAAWWUBBIS, Complex interrupter,  Fanboys, Zig Zag sentence structures are.

Here are the samples that I wrote :

AAAWWUBBIS : Before bed, we got to have a bedtime story.

Complex interpreter : The yummy cake, chocolate and delicious, got devoured in one sitting.

I love vanilla ice cream, it taste so creamy and it melts in your mouth, it is so delicious.

Zig Zag : Next you have to pour your cake batter into the cake tin. Once you poured your cake batter into the cake tin, put it in the oven for . . . . . . . . .

Fanboys : The cake was really yum, so I ate 5 more pieces.

Breakthrough Exhibition Reflection - By Vera

Breakthrough is always one of my favorite subjects at Stonefields School. This year we got to have a whole school breakthrough exhibition. There were a lot of amazing performances like dancing, gymnastics, singing, magic shows, etc.

My breakthrough was making a musical (Leaving me). Where we got the opportunity to be an actor, dancer, DJ/music player, stage manager, director, etc in a real musical.

What part of the exhibition were you most proud of?

I think the thing I was most proud of was the first show even though some people couldn't make it to the hall, we still performed the musical as we practiced.

What area of the graduate profile do you think you have grown the most? And Why? (Building Learning Capacity, Making Meaning, Collaboration, Breakthrough)

I think I have grown more in collaboration, because without collaboration we won't be able. to move all the props off and on the stage. If our collaboration wasn't strong we would have a lot of disagreements every time we practice.

What feedback did you get from visitors last night?

Some people said that the show was really organised and well performed.

What part of your exhibition would you have done differently?

I think I would have made our collaboration stop, a bit more creative we could add some more flowers and colour into it.

Who would you like to thank for supporting you in your breakthrough learning?

I would like to thank Whaea nin for organizing this opportunity for the people in the musical to be in the musical.

I would like to thank the people in the musical because without them, the musical wouldn't be the musical that we have right now.

I would like to thank all the parents that helped because without them we won't be able to have the costumes, photography, etc, working better.

But at the end I think the musical wasn't that bad after all, I really enjoyed my time working and learning with people I've never worked with, and got to learn more about other people.

Book review - Diary of a wild boy By Vera

This was my book that I read for this week in Mrs Parkers literacy group, we had to do a tic tac toe then share it with a buddy, then write a book review about it.

These are just some of the words I didn't understand.

Interesting Facts

The interestingest fact for this book was that going on a trip was to explore, make new friendship, and most importantly exploring is lonely when you are by yourself, it can also be scary, without a friend or someone beside you. It stood out for me from the conclusion he/the explorer made it was a really good ending and talked about how it was to go around the NZ coastline and what he learned throughout this trip.

Summary

Who : The boy/explorer

What : He was going on a trip around the coastline of NZ.

When : When he was 19 years old it took him 600 days, started on the first of February 2013.

Where : Around the coastline of NZ North and South Islands

Why : Because he wanted to challenge himself and turn his life around to make it better.

Science Week Recount - Vera

This week Mrs Parkers literacy group have been learning how to write a recount, so we decided to write a recount about our science experiments that we did. (It was SCIENCE WEEK!) I hope you enjoy my writing!

The Dancing Raisins

On the 17th of may 2016 hub 8 learners decided to try some science experiments because it was SCIENCE WEEK! I was so excited to try out the science experiments that was planned for us. One of the experiments was called the Dancing raisins it sounded really cool and fun.

The ingredients for this experiment was really simple and I could even do it at home, it was only lemonade or soda water and some raisins, with a cup. I wondered how it would make the raisins dance? The ingredients made me really curious about this experiment.

Before the experiment, we predicted that the raisins will dance and float above the water. I predicted this because I know that soda is fizzy and maybe the fizz would make the raisins float and dance in the water, and because of it's name ( Dancing raisins ).

The first thing I did was pouring the soda/lemonade into the cup and add some raisins. When I put the ingredients into the cup, I was asking myself if the raisins would even dance? What actually made the raisins move?

I had a lot of questions bursting into my mind, I really wanted to know answers for all of my questions. Maybe it was just me but I thought that it was sure kind of boring when you had to sit their and watch the raisins, It was really weird because the raisins weren't moving they were just lying on the bottom of the cup, I started wondering if we did something wrong or if the name was called wrong? Just then when we were going to give up hope some of the raisins floated up onto the water and then went back down, as if it was dancing!

I was really confused of how the raisins floated up but then went straight down again? We continued on looking at the cup of dancing raisins and we saw that bubbles were starting to form and stick onto the raisins maybe the bubbles were what the things that make the raisins float, but then why does the raisins drop down once they floated to the top? Mr Stuart told us that the reason why the raisins will drop down is because once the bubbles reach the top they will automatically pop and then the raisin will have to much weight to float and drop down. But their was one question that everyone had how did the bubbles even stick onto the raisins? Nobody had the answer for that one.

I learned that the raisins were to heavy to float but the soda's bubble are light enough to make the raisins float up. From my estimate I learned that there's lot of learning behind a science experiment. I also had a lot of fun doing this experiment.  I would definitely do this experiment again!

Procedual text - How to draw a elephant. By Vera

In literacy, Mrs Parker's group have been learning about how to write a procedural text, we had to watch some youtube videos with no sounds, and write the steps by our self. We also got to add some photo's to go with our writing, to make it easier to understand.

How to draw a elephant (easy)

Materials

Paper

Pencil/Pen/Vivid/Sharpie

A circle for tracing(optional)

Colouring pens (optional)

Instructions

1) Get your piece of paper and your pencil then draw a circle for the face of the elephant.

2) Now draw two curved lines going of the bottom a little bit side.

3) To make the hands on each side draw a horizontal line then another

straight line going up from each side and then connect it together!

4) Draw a circle on each side then connect them to the elephant's body.

5) He needs to have some nails!

6) Go ahead and draw him a trunk.

7) Draw your elephant some eyes and also draw him some ears to make them look more realistic add a line in the ears.

8) Colour the eyes in and make sure you leave a white spot in the middle.

9) For some finishing touches draw a few lines on the trunk, and some hair on the elephant.

10) If you want to make your elephant colourful, colour it in with coloured pencils!

Handy tips

If you want to make a perfect circle you can get a round object and trace it.

Stonefields School Flag - By Vera & Aashna

This is our flag for Stonefields School! We put the 4 rocks because it represents Stonefields School. We also put the silver fern since we are from New Zealand and we wanted something that represents New Zealand on the flag so if someone from another country looks at our flag from the internet or something, they would know imminently that this school is from New Zealand. We wanted to put the word Stonefields on the flag since other people from New Zealand will know that this school is in Stonefields, we thought that if we write Stonefields on the border of the Silver Fern, it will look pretty cool! Dear John Key,

Hi my name is Vera, I am 10 years old and I am a year 6 student from Stonefields school. I am just sending you this letter to give you my perspective around the New Zealand flag.

Firstly, I believe that we should change the New Zealand flag because it looks way too similar to Australia's flag, and some other people around the world sometimes gets confused with the 2 flag.

Secondly, I believe that we should change the flag because we don't follow most of the rules under the british, and that we are not really under the british government anymore.

Thirdly I think we should change the flag because I think it should have the colour black, on the flag because it is our national color, and most of New Zealand's sports team has black in their name.

This is why I believe that we should change the New Zealand Flag.
