Our Haiku Poems

Whaea Nin's Literacy group have been learning about poetry.
To create these Haiku poems we needed to think really creatively and learn all about syllables!

The Wonderful Hub 8

On Friday we had a special Travelwise Mufti day. This meant we were challenged to wear traffic light colours to raise awareness about safe travel to and from school.

Here's some fantastic pictures of the hub dressed in our theme.

Also, well done to the following learners who represented the hub in assembly and presented their play to the entire school at assembly. They even remembered ALL of their lines! Fantastic work team.

Christian's stained glass window

Lately in maths,  Mrs Parker's maths we have been given a template of a colourless stained glass window and told to design a pattern along with the colours within the shapes to show our knowledge of fractions, geometry and measurement.

Georgia's Persuasion - Why you should eat insects!

This week in Mrs Parker's literacy group we have been building our knowledge on insects and if you should or shouldn't include them in your healthy diet.

Eating Insects?
Eating insects "Eww!" Well believe it or not insects taste quite nice and are really good for you most contain vitamins , minerals , calcium , iron , Protein , Zinc and heaps more. Did you know that Mealworms taste like roasted peanuts and crickets tastes like popcorn. I strongly believe that we should include insects in our healthy diet and soon you will too.
Good for you and others
Insects are really good for you and others. They are really really easy and almost free to harvest. People in poverty could make money by selling insects to a restaurant. Insects are really good for you to , they can provide more iron and protein , calcium , Zinc and vitamins than meat. Did you only about 50% of a chicken can be eaten 40% of a cow is eaten but 80% of a cricket can be eaten.

Farming Insects
Insects aren't just better for you to eat , there also better to farm. Did you to produce 1 kilogram of beef it takes 22000L of water weres 1 kilogram of pork takes 3500L and 1 kilogram of chicken takes 2300L but for crickets it only takes 1L , imagine what it will be like for cows , chicken etc with food. Also when you farm insects it doesn't take up much space too. When you farm insects it doesn't just take a little bit of food and water but it also is better for the earth.

Better for the earth
Did you know it is better to farm insects than livestock it is cheaper and better for the earth. Livestock production accounts nearly a fifth of all the greenhouse gases emissions that's bad for the earth also insects produce only a lean amount of greenhouse gases and raising them requires a tiny amount of water , space and they can eat almost anything.

Conclusion
So insects taste quite nice , easy to harvest , better for the earth and you also you could make a job by selling them. Go try a insect , delicious and crunchy, you don't know what they will taste like , so have you tried one yet. Do you think you should include insects in your healthy diet?

Shanya & Ashleigh How Mummies were made?

Mrs parker have been teaching us about AAAWWUBBIS, FANBOYS, Complex interrupters and ZIG ZAG. We have been doing some examples of the 4 things that we learnt. Me and Ashleigh did this together.

Here is our annotating🖋

Shanya:

FANBOYS: I was not sleeping yet, even if my mum told me to.

Complex Interrupter: The big mountain,  very slippery and rocky,  was hard to climb.

ZIGZAG: I was willing to search for the diamonds. Diamonds are very expensive.

AAAWWUBBIS: Although I was scared of the cave I went into it to search for diamonds.

Ashleigh:

ZIG ZAG: When the storm has stop we are allowed to do something outside. Outside we did some paint.

AAAWWUBBIS: After we finished our homework, we will be allowed to do something fun!

Complex interrupter: After the the paint dries we need to glue some stuff on, like sparkle star and glitter, for decoration.

FANBOYS: I haven't finished my work, so I needed to do it in my break time.

Amy's reflection

On the 23rd of august ,Me and my breakthrough group performed and we  are  really proud of first of the performance even though we did not have the full cast . I think that I have grown most in breakthrough,I came from pot making to a production. My dad said that the second performance was better than the first one. What I would have done better being the music quicker because I was put on the music last minute.  I would like to thank kyle's dad because he help with the lighting and photos , Mr Hession helped with the props and trip , Faith's mum  with the niuean costumes , Whaea with the whole thing and all the props and getting in touch with all those people listed above.

The Ghosts of Young Nick's Head, Book Report #1, by Brittany.

For the past few weeks, Mrs Parker's literacy group has been assigned to do some independent work, mostly based on reading, first, we had to complete a reading log, then after we're finished we are to do a book report, mine is on the amazingly haunting and ghostly book named The Ghosts of Young Nick's Head. So, this is it, enjoy!

What is the secret of the haunted room? What is the shadowy form that lurks out on the headland? And why do Joe and Eddie keep finding themselves this close to becoming ghosts themselves? Terrified but still determined, the boys set out to crack a mystery that has remained unsolved for over 100 years..

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to a friend because it really brings you on the adventure within the pages, as if the story starts to unfold right before your own eyes. I felt I was somewhat sucked into the adventure, my sister had told me I was unresponsive, staring at my kindle for about an hour, only stopping once or twice to get a drink of water. And I have never done that before, maybe it was just because the kindle was cool or maybe I blanked out…?

All I can say is that the storyline is amazing, the characters, fascinating and the mystery.. Ghostly. But I would most likely recommend this for mystery, thriller and maybe horror readers, as this story can sometimes get a bit spooky.

All in all, it's a great read, one I would definitely recommend to all over the age of 10 or older.

The Ghosts of Tarawera, Book Report #2, by Brittany.

This past few weeks, we've been doing some independent work, mostly based on reading.I have been reading a book named The Ghosts Of Tarawera and just recently re-read it, so I have thus far completed the book twice and finished the other book from the series, so here is my book report! Enjoy. :D

Name:Brittany Date:17/8/16

Anastasia, her hair is long, falling onto her shoulders but sometimes tied up if needed, her nails are manicured and shiny with different colours of nail polish piled on top of it.

Describe their personality (eg. Friendly, helpful, scary, bully)

Anastasia, she's a kind hearted, friendly and somewhat of a tomboy, a cheerful, funny young girl.

Summarize the story: Include PROBLEM/CONFLICT, Main Events and CONCLUSION

While on vacation, Joe and Eddie are intrigued by the bubbling mud pools and gushing geysers in landscape around the lake where they're staying. They meet local volcanologist Rocky, who tells them about the cataclysmic 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera.

But Joe's fascination turns to unease when ghostly sightings of the 'phantom waka' and other appearances on the lake and rumblings, earthquakes and strange messages from an unknown number on facebook are all hinting that Mount Tarawera might erupt...Can he persuade Rocky, who puts his faith only in science, to sound a warning? Would he be able to save everyone in time? Would he be able to survive?.. It's mine to know and yours to find out.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This book grips you and kind of drags you into it, the book is just fabulous, with a great storyline, fascinating and quirky characters and most of all, the mysterious ghosts I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, this book has just as good of a storyline, or maybe even better than it's series starter. This book is so good I would probably want to buy this and re-read it just for fun.I'd definitely recommend this to others, especially mystery and horror book seekers.
