Insects should be added to the healthy diet By Cooper

TOPIC: People should include insects in their healthy diet.

Eating insects, you must be saying eww. But believe it or not insects are really good for you, and good for the earth. They have a name called Entomophagy. They also can help people in poverty. And did you know that crickets taste like potato chips and popcorn. Are you convinced yet ? Well if not then keep on reading.

Firstly insects can help people in poverty. Harvesting insects is really easy and doesn't cost much at all. People in poverty can harvest insects and later on sell them to restaurants and cafes that make insect salad. People in poverty find it hard to find jobs if they live on farm. Harvesting insects can be sold or kept to make their own restaurant. It also doesn't take up much land to contain these.

Secondly insects are very good for you. Insects contain lots of energy, protein and fiber. They contain lot's of minerals, vitamins, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and much more. Insects are also better than are daily meat source such as pork, beef and chicken. 80% of a cricket is more edible and digestible than 50% of chicken and 40% of beef.

Finally insects are good for the earth. Farming insects is really easy. To farm a cow takes 200m squared but a cricket only takes up 1 square metre. Cows also need lots of water other than crickets only need 1 litre of water. Insects are also good for the earth because they create fresh dirt and they remove all the bad insects by having battles.

That is why I believe that the world should add insects to their healthy diet. They are easy to harvest, they are good for you and the earth.

The Setting was so gloomy. It was in a town.

Violet has straight brown hair and when she had a idea or was inventing something she would tie with her cherry red bow. She wore a necklace that was shaped into a heart. She wore black clothes. She always wore a dress

Describe their personality (eg. Friendly, helpful, scary, bully)

Violet is nice and friendly she is very ladylike. Violet is protective of her siblings because she is the oldest. Violet is smart and likes to invent things.

Klaus is very smart and kind. He will stick up for his sisters even if it puts him in danger. He likes reading books and he knows what really hard words mean.

Sunny the youngest is cute and very strong. Sunny likes teeth and she has four very sharp front teeth. She likes hard things and books about teeth.

It all started with the children at the beach. Violet was skipping rocks. Klaus was reading his books and sunny was chewing on something. Then in the fog appeared Mr Poe. He had told the children that their parents had perished in a fire. The children's hearts filled with sadness. Mr Poe told the children that they perished in the mancheon. Mr Poe took the children to the house to see it one last time and see if anything had survived. Sunnys invention stand was ruined. Klaus's library was burnt with all the books and Sunny's favorite chew toy had burnt to. Mr Poe told the children that they would be staying with him for a while. When Mr Poe found someone that was their relative to look after them they were happy. Mr Poe took the children to the other house. They were going to their Uncle Count Olaf's. Count Olaf was scary and always drew one eye. Count Olaf was horrible he would hurt the children, make the children do the chores and threaten them. Count Olaf made a play. He made him the groom and Violet the bride and got a really judge to say the words. He told the children that if Violet wouldn't marry him then he would drop Sunny from the tallest tower. Sunny was trapped in a cage hanging out from the window. Violet had a idea to write with her left hand instead of her right. Count Olaf saw Violet sign the paper and he released his plan. Everyone was shocked but then Violet revealed the truth and before he could drop Sunny, The cops handcuffed Count Olaf and took him to jail. Why did he do that ? So he could get the Baudelaire fortune. The children ended up living with Mr Poe until Mr Poe finds another person to live with. Who will it be? I recommend this book if you like adventure. This book doesn't have a bad or good ending and it has a whole series. There is also a movie based on this book series.

The Breakthrough Exhibition

Q1 : What part of your exhibition are you most proud of ?

I am most proud of the dances that we did because when we practiced we did it OK but on the day we made our moves clear and we all smiled and it was really fun. I also am proud of dances because we didn't make a mistake and when we did we would just smile and carry on.

Q2 : What area of the graduate profile do you think you have grown the most ? And why ? (Building Learning Capacity, Make Meaning, Collaboration Breakthrough)

I think I have grown most on Make Meaning. I think this because I had learn't more about my culture and more about what they wear.  I also learn't about other culture's like the Cook Islands. I also think that I grown most on Make Meaning because I learn't new stuff and cool dance moves.

Q3 : What feedback did you get from  the visitors last night ?

The visitors were very impressed with dances we did and the play itself. They also told me to smile with my teeth to make it look I am having a blast.

Q4 : What part of your exhibition would you have done differently ?

If I could go back in time I would have smiled more and I would have tied mt titi on more tightly because it fell off during the dance. I would have also got changed faster than I did before.

Q5 : Who would you like to thank for supporting you in your breakthrough learning ?

I would like to thank Vera for helping me get changed into my clothes and reminding me what scene was next before I got changed into the wrong clothes.

The Deadly Tsunami By:Cooper

The Japanese word for a "harbour wave" also known as a tsunami. The very deadly disaster that has taken out lives in many areas. The famous tsunami has been in movies and on TV. It is a criminal that can't be caught.

What are the causes

The causes of the deadly tsunami are usually caused by the tectonic plates of the earth in the ocean pushing up against each other. Eventually one of the tectonic plates of earth give up. One of the plates rise whilst the other stays at the normal level. The sea level will rise from the normal sea level.

When the sea level rises from it's normal sea level it will start to form a big wave. The wave will start getting bigger as it gets closer to the shore. That will make the tsunami. Another reason for a tsunami to form is because of a meteorite. When the meteorite hits the water the pressure of it turns it into a big wave. Like when you punch the water in the ocean it makes a little wave. It is depending on the size of the item hitting the ocean or water. The bigger the object the bigger the splash, and, the smaller the object the smaller the splash. It also is depending on the weight of the object. The meteorite is a less suspected because it hasn't happened much in areas.

       What can tsunamis do

The deadly harbour wave has happened in many countries such as Japan. In Japan the tsunami had taken away more than 10, 000 people's lives and they say that 1500 people are still missing.(NZ Herald, John Armstrong) The deadly wave had also happened on islands like Samoa. In Samoa the tsunami took away 190 lives.

How can we prepare for this

To know when a tsunami is coming is very simple if you look for these signs.

One of the signs to look for is if there water goes out very fast or it might come in very fast. Another way to know when is when the warning buoys alarm the people or you can check on the radio or tv. Sometimes if a tsunami or natural disaster is coming the animals will start acting very strange. If you see a meteorite coming close to earth you should start moving. It is best to get canned foods for any natural disaster. To get away from a tsunami go to the highest ground and warn everyone else.

The Dancing Raisins by Cooper

On the 17th of May 2016 the Whole of Hub 8 did a science literacy day.

The first thing Mrs Parker literacy group did was all walk over quietly to Mr Stuart's area. We all sat down and listened to what we would be doing and how it works. Mr Stuart told us why the raisins would go up and down. He told us that the raisins go up and down because the bubble hold onto the wrinkles lift it up to the top and the bubble pops so then the raisin goes back down. Then Mr stuart explained to us what ingredients we would be needing. You need Soda Water, 7 raisins and a cup to put the ingredients in.

Mr Stuart then told us to get into our groups of 3. The group I was in with was Charlotte, Georgia and myself. We walked over to our table and sat down. Then Charlotte had a idea to make a video about. As soon as Mr Stuart came with the ingredients we needed to do this experiment we turned the camera on and started the video. I poured the soda in the cup and Georgia put in the seven raisins. Then Charlotte told the video what we were going to be doing.

When we put the raisins in the bubbles started to stick to the raasin and start to lift it to the top. We watched the bubbles go to the top and popping and dropping it. We each wrote down what we were seeing. The longer the raisins were in the cup the colors would change and the raisins looked like they getting even more wrinkly. We each took turns showing the camera what was happening in the cup and it was my turn. I picked the cup up and after a couple of minutes no one else wanted to hold it so I was stuck holding it. When I didn't know it all of a sudden I dropped the cup. When I dropped I quickly ran to get the paper towels and quickly wiped the table. When I was finished cleaning the mess up, Me and Charlotte quickly on the computer to see if the video but it wasn't. We were really disappointed but we were fine.

That was one of the coolest experiments ever. It was cool learning about why and how the raisins were going to float. It was funny how I dropped the cup. I had a really fun time.

Learning this week

The past couple of days have been busy busy getting to know one another. 

Dylan, Elijah, Sophie and Seb sharing their
problem solving on the measurements of our waka!

Yesterday we were building knowledge about Kowhaiwhai patterns, what the different designs and colours represent. We applied this knowledge to make our own patterns, which share stories about our families and interests. To determine what size our kowhaiwhai patterns would be, a team of Hub 8 learners worked together to problem solve based on the number of learners and the approximate size of the waka. 

Our painted squares will later be put onto our class waka along with our class treaty values.  Stay tuned to see the final product! 

This week we've also been doing some sports rotations, getting to work together in teams and challenging ourselves to learn new skills. 

Basketball Relay Games 

Today we were practicing some maths games that we will be using throughout the year. Some of us got stuck in the learning pit, but collaborated and were able to problem solve to work out the math puzzle. The puzzle was called 24, where we had to use multiplication/division, addition/subtraction to make the four numbers on the card equal 24.
