Stained Glass Window, By Brittany.

For some time, Mrs Parker's numeracy group has been learning about geometry, measurement and fractions, so to show what we have learnt in the past term, our teacher has created a challenge of sorts.
We had to create a stained glass window and then after, explain the measurements, the geometry and fractions for our stained glass window.
Here's mine, enjoy!

Should we be eating insects? By Brittany

This week, Mrs Parker's literacy group has been learning about persuasive writing, and strangely, she has made us write about eating insects!
I bet your thinking, 'Yuck!' or something like that, but it is an interesting topic!
First we had to watch videos about eating insects and see if perhaps we could find our own side in this small argument, and I unlike some others in my group has chosen to maybe give eating insects a chance.
If you, like me before I learnt more about the topic was grossed out, perhaps I could change your mind..
Enjoy!

Should we be eating insects?

For some of us, bugs are pests, creatures that ruin our crops and annoy us at times, not many of us might think it but people all over the world eat bugs! Disgusting? Thought so. But not for me, I for one think that we probably should eat bugs! Yes, I know it's disgusting and you might be saying yuck on the other side of the screen, but I truly think so, they are nutritious, inexpensive to farm and also take a ton less water than cows, sheep, chickens and pigs, and when I say that I mean it literally. You may be wondering, what kind of mad cuckoo person am I? But I do have reasons for my perspective in this side of the argument and I do swear, I'm being completely reasonable here.

Healthy, not so disgusting!
My first and the most stupid and craziest of all my reasons are because they are nutritious, having even more vitamins, minerals and even irons than beef! You may be thinking I'm probably lying, if I wasn't everyone in the world would be eating bugs right now! But sadly, us humans believe that bugs are disgusting because to us, they are pests, but this coming from a girl whose brother ate a ladybug, I think you can trust me, and I do assure you I am not joking.Think this was weird? Try me, I have another few weird reasons slipped up my sleeve.

Easy to farm and gain money off farming insects.
This reason is less weird and more interesting, I don't think you know this but this fact I found very interesting myself, bug farming is inexpensive as bugs are naturally attracted to food, people who are less fortunate than us are able to raise them without money and gain quite the sum of money from the bug farming business as they take less water to raise and mostly feed off scraps and though  it takes a few yards of land to raise cattle but cricket farms take the smallest of the amount of land that takes to hold and farm cow and are are also able to be raised in most conditions.

Edible and less costly to farm.
The last reason is that they are almost 80% edible compared to cows, pigs and chickens which take are about 40% to 50% edible and to make it more amazing we could help support the water crisis in the next few years by eating bugs! Crickets take only 1 litre of water to raise, compared to a kilogram of beef, which takes the large amount of 22000 litres of water, a kilogram of pork, 3500 litres and a kilogram of chicken which takes 2300 litres! Imagine the amount of water we're using just to raise farm animals! And if that's not enough, surprisingly, there are many products out there such as Cricket flour and scorpion, ant and cricket lollipops! Your most likely thinking, yuck, but hear me out. Bugs, like lobsters and crabs used to be considered as pests but now are enjoyed as a delicacy all around the world, perhaps it could be the same for insects? People from other countries in the world eat Tarantulas, Scorpions, Silkworms, Crickets, Beetle Larvae and many other insects that some of us consider gross, considering them as a delicacy, like us in other countries who seem to consider lobsters and snails as delicacies and if there even is a practice, called entomophagy, the practice of eating insects, I don't think it can be that bad, can it?

What have we learnt?
Truly, I believe that we should integrate insects into our diet as they are healthy, easy to raise and more edible and easier to farm and take less water to raise than cows, pigs and chickens. They are filled with vitamins to make our immune system stronger and are easy to find all over our world.Maybe next time your somewhere in china or perhaps try one of their fried insects, and trust me, my mom has eaten insects before, she claims they are actually quite scrumptious! So I believe, with all my heart that we should be eating insects.

Leaving Me, Breakthrough Exhibition Reflection by Brittany

For the past 15 weeks, my breakthrough group has been producing a play, a musical to be exact.
We have been rehearsing and rehearsing until we had it almost perfect, recently on Tuesday the 23 of August we put on two shows.
Below is my reflection on the night, enjoy!

  • What part of your exhibition are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my classmates who did the dances, in fact, all of the dances, their dancing that night was just spectacular!

  • What area of the graduate profile do you think you have grown the most? And Why? (Building Learning Capacity, Making Meaning, Collaboration, Breakthrough

I think I have grown lots in Collaboration as I had to work with others like Faith, Elijah, Maddy and the others and being able to create quite a fantastic little show with the others stretched me and I was also able to strengthen my bonds with the others during the making of the show.

  • What feedback did you get from visitors last night?

Judging from the loud clapping and smiles on my family's face and the feedback I got from them, I supposed that most of them enjoyed it.

  • What part of your exhibition would you have done differently?

I probably would've tried to stop switching jobs, from script writing to setting then acting & singing. It got pretty annoying after a while, to be honest.

  • Who would you like to thank for supporting you in your breakthrough learning?

I would like to thank Whea Nin, the parents, my classmates and all the other teachers who helped organise our event and helped to create it.

The causes and damage of a Tsunami.

This week, our literacy group has been learning about Tsunamis.
Interesting topic? I didn't think so at the start, but surprisingly, it was!
The Wondrous Wekas read 6 texts, all having the common interest in Tsunamis.
After reading all of them, Mrs Parker's literacy group did a follow up activity along with an explanation on the causes and the damage of a tsunami.
So here is my piece of writing, hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed making it.

The causes and damages of a Tsunami.
Some people may or may not have heard on the news, on the web, from their parents, friends, etc about a tsunami, (Soo-Nah-Mee).
But have you ever wondered what it is? Why it happens?
Tsunami is the Japanese name for a harbor waves, they built over a course of time, a powerful natural-force made disaster.Unlike normal waves, they are caused by the other natural disasters.
So first up, the warning signs. So what warning signs are there? Are they efficient? For some, we may think, ‘Heh, I’m fast enough! I can outrun a tsunami!’, but sadly, billions of people have died attempting to outrun them, none have succeeded, unfortunately. So, some before-hand tsunami warnings are newspapers and radios, almost all the time there would always be a Tsunami warning on news if there is going to be one, but if you are at a beach there would be Tsunami buoys floating around and they’d go off. Do not fret, for scientists are always monitoring the seismic activity within our lovely earth.
Okay, so let’s talk about the causes..To put it lightly, Tsunami’s may be what people think are larger waves, though it may seem like that, they are not made by the same thing.Tsunami’s, unlike waves are caused by energy, originating from the water, which rush through the sea which are also caused by the shifting and movement of what we call, Tectonic plates. When they collide they result in releasing a burst of energy, displacing a large amount of the water.Waves are small air-made water currents, which are small and harmless, Tsunami’s, unlike their smaller counterpart have reached over sea level in a large amount of cases. The water would slow down and grow, allowing it to grow at least higher than sea level, but due to gravity it’ll pull it down, allowing the water to ripple out, spreading it across the entire area. Once the tsunami gets to the shallower area, since there is less water to move through the massive amount of energy will be compressed, this is something that occurs that is called, Wave Shoaling.Soon enough, the tsunami will reach the shore. It’ll release all the energy that had been building up in the harbor wave, slamming as hard as it can on to the land. The water will flow through the affected area, killing anything and anyone in it’s path. As if that part wasn’t bad enough,, the water would retreat, dragging anything or anyone who was unfortunate enough to be in the newly collected debris under water to their terribly fated death. But, if this is true.. What is the damage?
There are two questions, the emotional damage or long term environmental damage. For emotional damage some people who were unfortunate enough to meet face to face with this natural disaster sometimes have to go for counseling due to PTSD(Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and sometimes even depression, due to loss of family members or others. As for Enviromental damage, it can last forever, there have been many cities that have been hit by Tsunami’s, they get destroyed completel and the repair would cost a few millions, maybe billions of dollars. It’d take a few years to replace and rebuild the city or town, depending on the size of it.
So, since we’ve been talking about so much about of all this death and despair, let’s talk about some interesting facts about tsunamis, shall we?
Tsunami’s travel about 500 mph (805 k-mph), pretty impressive, isn’t it?
Some tsunami’s have reached the height of 100 feet(30 metres), that’s pretty cool, but the average height is about 30 feet (9 metres), that’s pretty tall!
About 80% of Tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ring Of Fire and New Zealand is spot on the ring of fire.
In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami was caused by an earthquake with the energy of 23,000 atomic bombs. After the earthquake, killer waves radiating from the epicenter slammed into the coastline of 11 countries. The final death toll was 283,000! That’s a lot of people who died..Not really happy is it?
Hawaii is always at great risk for a tsunami – they get about 1 per year and a severe one every 7 years. The biggest tsunami that occurred Hawaii happened in 1946, the coast of Hilo Island was hit with 30 ft waves at 500 mph.
And last of all, one of the most interesting facts, Tsunami is the japanese word for Harbor wave as the tsunami only becomes visible when it’s close to shore, unless you are a bird, of course.

So, what have we learnt? The warning signs, causes and the damage. So tsunami’s are tidal waves, caused by other natural disasters which lead to this one, they can harm things and people, emotionally and enviromentally, tsunami’s destroy.. Well, everything. This was interesting for me to learn, I hope it was for you too, reader.

Rain, By Hone Tuwhare & Animated by Brittany

This week, Mrs Parker's Literacy group has been working on poems.
The group, Wonderous Wekas have recently read a poem named Rain, written by Hone Tuwhare and have been tasked to create a animation, sing the poem or create our own about rain.
I had chosen to make a animation and so here is my animation!

The Deer Debate!

This week, one of the groups in Mrs.Parker's literacy group has been learning about the Deer Debate in New Zealand and were set up with a task to create a persuasive writing or poster, I have chosen to create a little mix of both.
The first task was to build our vocabulary knowledge, the second was to write this letter.

Brittany's Mission Bay Recount

It was the 7th of June, another icy cold day in winter and on that day we had went to Mission bay.

We had got off the bus, others whom had been at the back were still pouring out of the doors.
When everyone had got off, the bus driver drove off quickly- Poor busdriver! The teachers led us to a large patch of grass where we sat down, they gave us instructions on the subject of our sandcastle competition we were to do in a few minutes time.
They also announced that we would be walking to the other side of the beach, as there was more sand on that area opposed to the area of beach where we were, that was invaded with seashells that had washed up on shore. After they had finished speaking, we all stood up and walked, chatting continuously as we walked to the other end of Mission Bay.

When we had gotten there we had been sent off to start sculpting, digging and building.
There, the collaborative group I was allocated to was with Izzy, Seb, Alan, Shayan and Angela had started to dig a pit into the sand. Alan, Izzy, Shayan and I went scavenging the beach for clams, but were unsuccessful as we were only able to find lots and I mean lots of shells and not even a single clam, whilst Seb, was already done digging the Sarlacc pit. When I got back to our little area, the pit was quite large. Then, I had dumped the shells onto the ground, creating a mound of seashells. The others got back soon after and also dumped more shells and surprisingly, also sticks onto the mound. I found myself scooping out sand from inside the pit and dumping on the sand and was molding the sand into a large tentacle.
Soon enough, the others had joined and helped me create the rest of the tentacles and we were finally done with them. I dumped a mound of sand into a mile, then sculpting it into the neck of a Sarlacc and placed two shells as the head, side facing the bottom of the floor onto the sand and molded the neck onto the head.
We were finally done when we heard a whistle, time was up! We had finished just in time.

The teachers called us all to do the beach game rotations, the games including our choices of games in which were Beach Flags, Relays and Soccer. I went for Beach Flags first, as I was in Mr.Stuart's guardian group and while I was waiting I decided to collect a few shells.
When it was my turn, Mr Stuart waited for the others to decide who was going to go and I had already jumped and I lay there on the sand.
Mr Stuart shouted, "GO!", my heart raced when he shouted.
I pushed myself up, running as fast as my legs could take me but the fact that there were pieces of shell poking into my socks and jabbing my feet didn't help at all and sadly, I scrambled to grab one of the sticks but Ryan beat me to it, we both grabbed the stick but he tugged it away pulling it away from my grasp. The rest of the time at Beach flags was spent watching the others run while I sat there, staring into space out of boredom and humming a tune.
After, I went to soccer, the same jabbing sensation existed in my feet, I'm guessing that I'm just not very used to being on a beach full of pieces of chipped shells and running on it.
I had done my best, trying to ignore the pain in my feet but the sad thing was that it didn't really help that much trying to ignore it.
My team had tried the hardest but..In the end we didn't win, as I can recall I think the final score that Mrs.Parker had said was 4 to 5 or something. But that's an estimate as I am not able to remember. Lastly, I went for the relays with Whea Nin. It was surprisingly fun and I found it that I had run faster without my shoes, but as my shoes were the bulkier type and so it had actually added more weight to my shoes making it my feet heavier and harder to lift and run quicker but track shoes and running shoes on the other hand are not as heavy.
To my surprise, I was actually so much faster on this area of the beach, I'm not sure if it was because of the fact that there were less shells or that the sand was not wet or something but I was able to complete running the relay in about 1 minute, 48 seconds as I remember when I counted. When both teams finished the relay, we went back to our seating area at the large patch of grass near to a parking lot.
We all took out our lunch boxes from our bags and ate our lunch, when most of us finished we were sitting there talking.

Soon enough everyone finished eating their lunch, the winners had been announced and I wasn't surprised that it wasn't our Sarlacc, to be honest it really wasn't good.
It was so bad that someone had stepped in it and ruined it as I had seen it happen before my eyes while walking around the beach, viewing my classmates' amazing sand sculptures.
I laughed it off though, as seen as even me and my teammates had agreed it wasn't the best that we could've done.
After the announcement, we left to go back to the playground and all of us were running like dogs chasing after a ball.
All of us were running to the playground, Isaac and I had our eyes set on a prize, the swing.
Luckily he had gotten there before anyone could and we were playing on the swings and some weird seesaw thingy(I have no idea what it is though)
Soon, it was the end of Lunch and time seemed to had flown by so quickly.

Then, right then it was time.. For the great waka race!
The teachers called us to the grass patch, we sat there while they delivered the instructions for the waka race.
We all ran like a stampede of bulls to the fountain, all of us stuck our hands into the icy water and started to push the water to the left to create a current, then switched when we realised there was an already existing current going to the right.
The teachers allowed us to shove our wakas in, mine almost instantly flipped upside down.
It continued to float around the entire pool and I was watching from the sides, continuously flipping the boat over and over again when it turned upside down.
Soon enough, my boat had already went the entire way around the fountain and was already 1/8th the way through the second lap.
Unfortunately, we were called back down to the grass and everyone picked their soaking wet wakas from the fountain and hurried back.

Our bus had already arrived and we walked to the bus stop there where our bus was waiting for us and we all got on.
I sat down with Isaac and stared out the window.
To be honest this field trip was the best I'd ever had in my entire life, but not better than school that I would want to have a field trip every week and I was surely looking forward to tomorrow.

Coke Explosion! Science Experiment Recount by Brittany G

I was sitting in the garden., waiting for my sisters to come and bring the coke out, and my brother to bring the mentos to the garden as well.
I jumped off the ground and waited for them to come through.
Then..A figure emerged behind the gate, clicking sounds from the lock being un-hooked.When the lock was un-latched, my sister and brother came walking through. My eldest sister, Hilary, cracked open the bottle of coke, setting it down onto the grass. Then, Ethan, my second eldest brother had opened up the pack of mentos.

I jumped up and down enthusiastically, my brother hands me the mentos, I held one in my hand.I shouted at them to stand away and they slowly walked backward, away from the bottle.Quickly, I had thrown the mentos inside the bottle, the reaction was taking place already.

I had figured out that in my case, the reaction was called Nucleation, in which the carbon-dioxide inside the coca cola or in all fizzy drinks are attracted to mentos, It creates too much pressure within the bottle, so because of gravitational force and physics,  the soda goes shooting upward and rockets into the sky.

After, I ran away hurriedly, behind me the carbon dioxide slowly bubbled upward.Foam bubbled from the top of the bottle, it shot up quickly straight up into the sky.
I just sat and watched in awe while watching the drink slowly fall to the ground in splats.

I had loved the day and it seemed that there was to be more in store for me.

We're going on a field trip!

Some of the learners from Hub 8 wrote this wonderful letter to ask for permission for a field trip we are planning for our concept learning. It's an awesome sample of collaborative persuasive letter writing.

23 May 2016

Dear Miss Martin,

We are writing to you because we need permission to go to Mission Bay on the 9th of June 2016.

We chose as a hub that collaboration is the learner quality  that we need to work on the most. Then we looked at a range of places and Mission Bay had most the votes, so we decided that we would go to Mission Bay.
The trip is for our concept learning and we believe this trip will strengthen our ability to work collaboratively within a group of people who we usually don't work with. It will also construct new relationships with our fellow classmates.

We are currently collaboratively working on the E.O.T.C, R.A.M’s and the organisation of the transport to Mission Bay, including plan and lastly, a race in the fountain with our mini wakas. We had built these mini-wakas for this specific reason for our concept learning as well.

The things we did to plan to go to Mission Bay were that we had to make a healthy lunch and  decided on what collaborative games we were going to play. Also we went on a  preparational trip to the Wetlands so we know what to expect, here we had practiced playing our own collaborative games.

Once we have your approval we will write and send letters to the parents to inform them of the coming trip. We are really looking forward to getting permission to go to Mission Bay. This will be such a great learning opportunity.

Yours sincerely,

Learning Hub 8.

Brittany's Goldilocks Tale

Brittany has crafted this version of Goldilocks, check out her great use of vocabulary and language features like onomatopoeia and hyperboles. See if you can spot them all.

There are different versions of Goldilocks and the three bears like The Three bears and the classical Goldilocks and the three bears. Well all of them pictured me as the protagonist, all of them were wrong.
No one has ever heard my side of the story, the real story. Why not I tell you what happened?

Since I was a baby I was the greedy type, well I was practically a thief since I was 5. And well, I was nicknamed “ Little Devil”. I had been in jail once or twice... By that I maybe mean... Like a million times since I was a kid!

It was a beautiful day, birds were singing, flowers were blooming...And today, of all days I was being chased  by bodyguards.
And well, sometimes I’m not even sure how it happens.
Just before I was walking around the town market, I spotted someone that looked strange and they didn’t belong here at least not in my town.
Beside her two men in tuxedos stood, presumably bodyguards.
In each of their pockets I spotted a gun, just one of those usual Rifles.
The woman had a silk cape draped on her shoulders,  gems and jewels of all kinds like rubies, emeralds and crystals were embroidered onto her cape.
A small piece of a crystal could be seen in her pocket, as she walked I followed her.
I smirked at myself. I stepped forward onto her silk cape, it flung her backward and the crystal dropped out of her pocket.
CLANG!
I took a quick glance at the ground, or more importantly what was there.
I quickly swooped in, grabbing onto the crystal and running away as fast as I possibly could. The guards charged forward to grab the crystal off my hands.
I was just trying to ‘Borrow’ something. Welp, back to being chased..

I ran into the forest, small patches of mud were surrounding me.
I smirked at myself. I could trip them by leading them into the mud, I thought.
My heart pounded inside my chest, I ran toward one of the mud puddles. I jumped over the puddle, one of the guards fell in. Mud splattered everywhere, I hopped over the small puddles.
“Urgh!” I groaned, almost tripping into a puddle of mud. I quickly stepped down onto the ground with my other foot making sure I wouldn’t trip.
I struggled to get my foot out of the mud, I looked behind me.
The guard is almost here Come on! I thought to myself, determined to get out.
SHPLOT!
The mud let go of my foot, flinging me forward almost making me trip.
I looked forward, running away. I looked up to see a branch tall enough to hit the guard’s head.
I ducked underneath, grabbing onto the branch and pulling it backward.
The guard grunted, he fell backwards into a small puddle.
I looked behind, I chuckled.
I ran and ran until I got somewhere safe.
I watched a small family of bears leaving a small cottage in the woods. The door was left wide open allowing me to just run in.
The house was recently repainted and it let off a glowing shine into my eyes.
Hah, I could go in there... I thought to myself, as soon as they left into the woods from where I came from, I ran towards the door.
I put my hand onto the door, trying to open it.
Creeaaaak…
The door swung open.
I ran in, slamming the door behind me.I leant against the wall, pressing my back to the wall to make sure the door couldn’t open. I slid down to the floor, I looked around the house.
I could see a few valuables around the shelves, everything was right in place where I wanted it to be. Ranging from silver to gold, they stood out from the white colour of the walls.
I looked over at a small corner table, I ran over to it and pushed it over to the front door.
The guards knocked on the door, I didn’t reply.
“They mustn't be home” One of them said, all I could hear from through the wall was muffled speaking.
I sighed in relief, I walked away from the door.
I looked at the table, licking my lips. Three small bowls of porridge sat at the table, one large, one average sized and one small. Drool dripped down my chin. I rubbed my stomach, sitting down on the small chairs in front of the table.
My stomach growled, well I was hungry after all that running so..why not?
I grabbed onto one of the spoon and shoved some of the porridge from the largest bowl into my mouth, I spat it out.
“Hot,hot, hot, hot!”I shouted, I let go of the spoon.
I sighed, my luck was seriously running out.My hand grabbed onto the spoon, without hesitation I scooped some porridge from the medium sized bowl into my mouth.
“Too..cold!” I said, as I spat it out.
There’s nothing wrong with cold porridge but this one was freezing cold! I gulped, my hand hesitated to grab onto the last spoon. I dug the spoon into the last bowl of porridge, I put it into my mouth.
“Just right!” I said.
I smiled as I licked off the porridge off the spoon. I ate the rest quickly as if I hadn’t had food for days. I stood up thinking of what to do next..I chuckled at my thought, I grabbed onto the bowl smashing it onto the ground. I grabbed the last two, smashing them onto the table.
I smiled at myself proudly looking at the mess that I had made.
BURP!
I giggled, patting my bloated stomach.I walked into the room next to the dining room.
I looked at the 3 chairs, same as the porridge. One was huge, the other was quite a nice size and the last one quite small.
“Pretty!” I said, as if I was a small little girl eager to open a christmas present with beautiful wrapping.
I sat on the biggest one, I slowly peeled away at the fabric. I giggled, shreds of the fabric were scattered all over the floor.
Once I got quite a big chunk of it off,  I still wasn’t satisfied with the amount of trouble I had caused yet.
I sat on the next chair, a small book sat on top.Without caring I sat on the book and the chair.
“This one’s pretty too!” I said, acting like a child. I tore away at the fabric, one chunk fell off onto the ground. After I had finished, the floor was in a bad condition and the chairs looked worse then ever. I chuckled at my excuses and what I did.
I sat onto the smallest chair, it was made purely out of wood. I sat down leaning backwards to take a rest. It broke off with me landing on the ground.
I had my fun and I was tired. My back was aching from the fall so I went to find a bed.
Before I could get there, I spotted the valuables on the shelves.. My eyes were attracted to them like magnets. I ran towards them and started to stuff my pockets full of jewelry, gold and coins. I hurried upstairs to the bedroom to find the comfiest bed to sleep on.
The bedroom had 3 different beds, ranging from big to small. I jumped onto the big bed and it was way too hard. It made my back worse than before. The medium sized bed was was too soft, I could feel the wood poking at my skin. With no cushioning at all, I leaped over to the baby bed. It was tiny but comfy. It wasn’t too soft or hard, just right texture for my back. I laid there and in no time I fell asleep.
The three bears came back to see their house in a mess, broken pieces of ceramic everywhere with fabric lying on the ground. I heard the screams of terror coming from below. I got woken up from my ‘amazing’ dream. While they weren’t paying attention, I bolted down the stairs and escaped through the back door. My footsteps weren’t as heavy as the biggest bear there. Luckily they couldn’t hear me.  I laughed hysterically at myself and skipped away happily, another bad deed done. Another day over.

And that was the true story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears.

And only the beginning of my life of crime...

Sharing our breakthrough proposals

This afternoon we were sharing our breakthrough ideas with other members of the hub, have you ever seen Dragon's Den? Well it was kind of like that, in our groups we shared our plan and the other hub members were able to ask us lots of questions about how we were going to build knowledge and what our purpose was.

Isaac and Brittany sharing their proposal
Maddy and Isabella
It was fantastic for everyone to be getting excited about one another's breakthrough plans.
