Insects, should we eat them?

I believe that all people around the world should make the transition from meat and other foods to consumption of insects as a daily part of our diet, nearly all species of insects are edible and contain five times the amount of nutrition than that of normal delicacies such as beef and pork.

Usage of insects as regular food will provide more than enough vitamins and minerals for the humans of Earth when farming with livestock and gardening becomes scarce as the global population grows, it is estimated that by the end of the century there will be eleven billion people. 

Harvesting insects will be a valued occupation for poverty ridden countries and areas,  only allowing for workers to collect money easily but also have a constant supply of nutrition and vitamins. 

Insects themselves might even become a common compact superfood that everybody carries and enables a nearly infinite source of energy to rely on. This may not be the only food we'll ever eat if Earth does come to insect farming, we will still have to drink water even though most insects have water within themselves.

All in all, using insects as a source of food is a very good idea, holding worth five slabs of meat in one tiny body. As well as providing jobs and money I strongly believe people should stop thinking of bugs and insects as gross but instead as a very important player in the future of Earth food.

Locke, a largely known and sought for thieve, his hair a brownish-blonde colour with a grin plastered all over his face, slight scars travelling down his back and arms. Usually wears a refined black coat with a rapier and dagger hanging at his sides.

Locke is jolly most of the times, frequently hiding his craftiness and the grim side of him under a facade of happiness.

The year is 1256, a group of lethal mercenaries have been let loose on the known world, paid to hunt and kill the leaders of a widespread black market company feared on every continent known as The Republic Of Thieves. When Locke and Jean find themselves as the only obstacle between their source of income and the deadly group of paid killers, they are thrown into a incredible world of deceit, espionage and secrets. Will Locke and Jean make it out alive? Or will they never come back?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would definitely recommend this book as a MUST read. Every page is filled with delicious descriptions and events, with new aspects at every step. The plot is genius, slowly stretching over a long span of time whilst still retaining its juicy details throughout the book and beyond into other sequels. The way the main characters and other sub-characters are weaved into the plot are amazing, every event understood with clarity one after the next. This book and its series is truly one of a kind.

BOOK REPORT

Title of Book: Red Seas Under Red Skies

Author: Daniel Holdre

Setting: Medieval, ships, sea monsters.

Main Characters

Xev

Choose 1 main character to describe: What do they look like?

Xev: He has jet black hair, shaggy and a large fringe across his forehead. He has a light tan to his skin and a teardrop shaped birthmark on his back.

Monty: Bright vibrant red hair, and one crimson coloured iris and another deep brown one.

Xev and Monty have been chosen to go on an expedition in an unknown area of the Pacific Ocean, whilst caught in a hurricane Xev catches a glimpse of a large shape underneath the ship, and is knocked out soon after by a stray piece of wood planking, resulting in him being thrown off the ship into the ocean. Monty is left hanging on to a mooring rope left on the side of the ship, finding a ledge and crawling into it, falling into a deep slumber. Afterwards Xev wakes up a makeshift raft made out of broken pieces of timber and bits of tied rope, with Monty rowing with scavenged oars, the rest of the story is mainly based around finding a fabled creature called the Leviathan, and destroying it from the face of the world.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

To be honest I didn't find this book quite appetizing, the main events happening towards the end of the book and a large lack of descriptive capabilities. I wouldn't recommend this book to any relatives or friends or mine because of the way that the book leaves out major details to help read it and enjoy it. The only part which I found up to standards was the introduction the the setting of the book, nevertheless I didn't find this book entertaining at all.

Breakthrough Term 3 Reflection - Isaac S

I loved everything about the musical, from the lights to the props. The part I am most of was the settings and how we managed to order lights and props for the musical. Whaea Nin and other helpers were supportive and greatly increased the efficiency in which we successfully finished the musical within the time limit.

After our last performance at 7:15pm we received a large amount of feedback from both spectating learners and adults, one of the most prominent being slowing down when speaking and remembering to come onstage when you should.

I would like to thank Whaea Nin the most for bringing the musical together from just a bunch of people singing a lame song to a 25 - 30min theatre-like acting and dancing with lights and props. Truly this terms breakthrough was by far the best.

Our collaboration skills at first were quite low and we found it hard to communicate and get our opinions across, then gradually as the weeks past before we knew it we were talking and collaborating with each other as if we had always done it that way.

If I would like to keep the musical as it is and not change anything about it.

Isaac- Tsunami, What is it?

I would like to share a piece of literature based around tsunamis and what they do, enjoy!

A Tsunami

What is a tsunami? Well a tsunami is a immense wave of water that is caused by natural disasters most commonly based underwater, these disasters being: Underwater mudslides, volcanoes and earthquakes. Most commonly caused by tectonic plates underground. All these natural phenomenons release energy, and that energy causes the giant walls of water we see today that devastate the world all too often.

Mistakenly, tsunamis are called tidal waves when actually they have nothing in common with the tides themselves, as I explained above a tsunamis caused by a large released amounts of energy through the water and are not affected by the tides. As the energy travels the water follows with it, and when the water hits the shallow area of the coastal beach, the tides starts receding rapidly and the affected water starts to slow down and rise higher and higher until gradually a tsunami is formed, but by then it's already too late.

A tsunami's damage to a country's economy and financial state is incredible, the costs of repair usually ranking up

to millions of dollars. Not including the leftover debris and the hundreds or even thousands of people who died in the disaster. After a tsunami coastal communities are hellholes of destruction, many of their inhabitants dead or mentally scarred by the event. Some of these communities have tried building large concrete or steel walls, but even these towering protective slabs of brick and mortar fail to protect these beachside villages or even cities and still these devastating walls of water power through, destroying everything in their path.

All in all, a tsunami is a destructive force of nature that adds onto the large amount of possible natural disasters, ranging from sinkholes to tornadoes and volcanoes. And when a tsunami does occur, remember to always move to the highest point in your area whether it be a mountain or building if the tides start to drag out at a faster than usual pace, most of the time many people don't notice it as it travels through the water until it hits the beach. Nowadays scientists check tsunami buoys regularly so that when one does happen, not that it does happen frequently of course. That civilians have enough time to evacuate the area to high ground.

Now that we have covered everything everything about a tsunami, the damage it does, how it's formed, the warnings you can see to avoid it and extra facts. Many tsunamis have played a big part in historic battles and happenings, and maybe even in a few years, a century even. People may find a buried city that was lost in time by a tsunami. Well that's  all folks!

Mission Bay Recount - Isaac

It was Week 6, Tuesday, me and my hub were going to Mission Bay for our concept and had set up all the aspects of what was needed in the trip. As I stepped onto the hard pavement a hard frosty gust blew across my face and I clutched my jacket tighter to my body. Following the others I stumbled across the muddy grass, the teachers called for us to sit down near the playground. Slowly I opened my lunch box and took out my morning tea, I wolfed it down food and all. I stood up and ran towards the playground, and started to play. In what felt like so little time the teachers called us back and said that we were moving further down the beach, as we walked closer towards the sea the wind whipped at our bodies, the icy cold biting our feet. When we arrived at our destination we dumped our bags on the ground and collapsed. After explaining the rules the teachers started the sandcastle competition quickly, everyone scrambled over the stone wall barring the way towards the sea and raced towards where they wanted their sculpture to be. My group chose a wet spot near the moist tide and started to build.

Thirty minutes later our spot was a sprawling world of a sand hippo, crocodile mouth, and a octopus. Suddenly I was struck with a eureka moment, why not create a gigantic snake that surrounds our creations to act as an aesthetically awesome barrier to signify that these sand sculptures were ours? Bursting with excitement I shaped the head and the hands, slowly but surely I thickened the body and twisted it around the sculptures, my teammates decided to help and before we knew it the snake was finished, I finished the feet and added a few swirling designs on its back. I found a clump of seaweed and laid it out in front of the snakes head to act like fire. When we the whistle signalling the end of the competition we were happy with our work.

It was yet to be lunch and we had three more activities to do, the first being beach relays. Annoyingly enough my ankle started aching and I had to sit out for most of the relays. Soon we rotated and we moved to Mr Stuart's activity, we had to lay down on our stomachs and wait until Mr Stuart said "Go!" then we had to race and take a small pole, there was one less than the amount of people running. But the aching in my ankle had yet to fade away, forcing me to stay out for one more activity. Finally when we moved to Mrs Parker's group the painful ache in my ankle was gone, allowing me to participate freely in the last activity, beach soccer. I enjoyed acting as goalie though failing miserably, unable to block several goals.

Fifteen minutes after the activities it was finally time for lunch, we moved back down to the playground and devoured our food, soon after lunch was finished and we were all called back from the throes of joy on the playground. Finally the most fun part of the day was coming up. The waka race! We had all created unique wakas previously to the trip, my design was a stingray like one with a minuscule tail ram at the back. We all tensed up as we arrived at the fountain where we were to race, waiting to place our wakas in the water as soon as the teachers shouted the word that would start the race, then after an incredibly tense moment it started. We practically threw our wakas into the freezing fountain water, pushing them forward. We continued to analyse the path of the wakas, following them around the fountain until they reached the end. Once everyone had gone round the fountain we moved back near the playground and talked for a while.

Then we stood up and walked towards the recently arrived bus, guided by our teachers. As we poured into the bus, I; already in a seat lolled off into a light nap. When I woke up we had completed the short drive back to school. I found that, this trip was quite the fun one today.

Gaster Blaster Concept, Home-made Fan-Art Undertale - Isaac

​This is a piece of fan-art based of a game called Undertale, each detail is a small white square, there are approximately 650 pixel squares in the art piece. The idea first came to me whilst I was think of novel or book ideas for an upcoming chronicle series. And I thought, how about I do a piece of fan-art? So I chose the middle gaster blaster concept, down below:

And I made my concept the baseplate the middle gaster blaster, and proceeded to adjust it to my desires. The result was the piece of art at the top of this post. I hope you enjoy my fan-art and wish for more. -Isaac S

We're going on a field trip!

Some of the learners from Hub 8 wrote this wonderful letter to ask for permission for a field trip we are planning for our concept learning. It's an awesome sample of collaborative persuasive letter writing.

Dear Miss Martin,

We are writing to you because we need permission to go to Mission Bay on the 9th of June 2016.

We chose as a hub that collaboration is the learner quality  that we need to work on the most. Then we looked at a range of places and Mission Bay had most the votes, so we decided that we would go to Mission Bay.

The trip is for our concept learning and we believe this trip will strengthen our ability to work collaboratively within a group of people who we usually don't work with. It will also construct new relationships with our fellow classmates.

We are currently collaboratively working on the E.O.T.C, R.A.M’s and the organisation of the transport to Mission Bay, including plan and lastly, a race in the fountain with our mini wakas. We had built these mini-wakas for this specific reason for our concept learning as well.

The things we did to plan to go to Mission Bay were that we had to make a healthy lunch and  decided on what collaborative games we were going to play. Also we went on a  preparational trip to the Wetlands so we know what to expect, here we had practiced playing our own collaborative games.

Once we have your approval we will write and send letters to the parents to inform them of the coming trip. We are really looking forward to getting permission to go to Mission Bay. This will be such a great learning opportunity.

Sharing our breakthrough proposals

This afternoon we were sharing our breakthrough ideas with other members of the hub, have you ever seen Dragon's Den? Well it was kind of like that, in our groups we shared our plan and the other hub members were able to ask us lots of questions about how we were going to build knowledge and what our purpose was.
