Lately in Mrs Parker's maths group we have been learning about fractions , measurements and geometry. Now we are putting what we've learn't to the test and making a stained glass window and we have to write and see if it has fractions , geometry and measurement. Hope you like it.

Georgia's Persuasion - Why you should eat insects!

This week in Mrs Parker's literacy group we have been building our knowledge on insects and if you should or shouldn't include them in your healthy diet.

Eating Insects?

Eating insects "Eww!" Well believe it or not insects taste quite nice and are really good for you most contain vitamins , minerals , calcium , iron , Protein , Zinc and heaps more. Did you know that Mealworms taste like roasted peanuts and crickets tastes like popcorn. I strongly believe that we should include insects in our healthy diet and soon you will too.

Good for you and others

Insects are really good for you and others. They are really really easy and almost free to harvest. People in poverty could make money by selling insects to a restaurant. Insects are really good for you to , they can provide more iron and protein , calcium , Zinc and vitamins than meat. Did you only about 50% of a chicken can be eaten 40% of a cow is eaten but 80% of a cricket can be eaten.

Farming Insects

Insects aren't just better for you to eat , there also better to farm. Did you to produce 1 kilogram of beef it takes 22000L of water weres 1 kilogram of pork takes 3500L and 1 kilogram of chicken takes 2300L but for crickets it only takes 1L , imagine what it will be like for cows , chicken etc with food. Also when you farm insects it doesn't take up much space too. When you farm insects it doesn't just take a little bit of food and water but it also is better for the earth.  

Better for the earth

Did you know it is better to farm insects than livestock it is cheaper and better for the earth. Livestock production accounts nearly a fifth of all the greenhouse gases emissions that's bad for the earth also insects produce only a lean amount of greenhouse gases and raising them requires a tiny amount of water , space and they can eat almost anything.

Conclusion

So insects taste quite nice , easy to harvest , better for the earth and you also you could make a job by selling them. Go try a insect , delicious and crunchy, you don't know what they will taste like , so have you tried one yet. Do you think you should include insects in your healthy diet?

Georgia's complex sentences

In Mrs Parker's literacy group we read a piece of writing , then we searched for AAAWWUBBIS , Complex interrupters , FANBOYS and Zig Zag. 
First we found examples in the explanation writing below, then we wrote our own examples.

AAAWWUBBIS : Before bed , I brush my teeth.

Complex interrupter : I love lollipops, crunchy and sweet, they are so delicious.

FANBOY: I love strawberries, so I always have them in my lunch.

Zig Zag : Next pour your favourite drink into the containers. The containers get put in the freezer.

Georgia's Tsunami Writing

Lately Mrs Parker's literacy group have been learning about tsunamis. Now we've gathered all the information that we've learnt and we have all made a piece of writing about them. Here's mine and I hope you enjoy it and learn a thing or two about tsunamis.

The cause and impact of tsunamis

There have been many tsunamis and people may wonder what causes them and what are the warning signs , who it effects and which country or city has the most tsunamis also how it happens and how to be prepared.

What Causes Tsunami?

Many thing can cause tsunami but the main ones are underwater volcanic eruptions , underwater earthquake , when tectonic plates move  and rub together , a landslide , storm surges , nuclear explosions  also a meteorite strike but that doesn't happen often. Some  scientist think that some tsunamis have something to do with the ring of fire , the ring of fire is a kind of half circle area where there are a lot of volcanos and also were a lot of earthquakes happen. This is because it follows a line around the pacific ocean where the tectonic plates meet.

What Is A Tsunami?

A tsunami is a colossal wave that is caused by many things it is like a wave of destruction. When it is in deep water its only little but when it is in shallow it can get really really big then when it folds over and hits the ground it destroys and floods the town/city. Also tsunami is a Japanese word meaning harbor wave.

The signs of a tsunami

 There are many signs of when a tsunami is coming these are the common signs. One of the signs is ripples in the ocean , also the tide goes back really really far back , the water moves and the waves travel across the ocean. There are also sirens that go off and warning buoys. Warning buoys are things in the water and they detect movement in the water and see if a tsunami is coming and when one is about to come they send a signal to a satellite and then the satellite sends it to a special computer and then the people who have the special computer warn people and tell them to get somewhere high.

What to do when a tsunami coming

One of the first things to do when a tsunami is coming get as far as away from it as possible then get somewhere really high. Also call for help and listen. You can also get prepared before there is a tsunami like don't move where there are active volcanoes that are near the water and there also might be signs that your area/street or other is prone to tsunamis.

How it effects the city's/community

When a tsunami hits it eradicate everything that's in its way and when the tsunamis over it leaves a trail of destroyed buildings. When tsunamis hit it also uses up alot of money to rebuild. Japan tried to build a huge concrete wall to stop tsunamis from coming over and destroying their community because they get alot of tsunamis there and they're sick of rebuilding. But a tsunami was taller than the wall and smashed the wall and destroyed it again.

Conclusion    

Tsunamis are really dangerous and cause alot of damage to their communities. There are alot of things that cause tsunamis and their are signs of tsunamis to. If you think you're in a tsunami use my information to help you.

Georgia's Recount about Science Week

Plan

Awesome Science!    

On 17th of May in hub 8 the whole hub did three different science experiments, one with each teacher. We were doing science because it was national science week.

The first experiment that I did was the Fizz Inflator with Mrs Parker, the title really grabbed me and I was so excited to do it. When we all got there we we started talking about H20 which is water and talked about other things like CO2.

So after that we actually started the experiment. First we talked about the ingredients. The ingredients were baking soda, vinegar , balloon  and a empty bottle. First Mrs Parker put some baking soda in the balloon, then Mrs Parker poured some vinegar in the bottle. Then she quickly put the balloon on top, then suddenly…

"Fizzzz" all the ingredients reacted together and the balloon blew up, straight up, it was so cool.

After that, we had enough time to do another one which was the yeast one. The ingredients we needed for it was yeast, caster sugar, water , balloon and a empty bottle. Firstly Miss Parker put the yeast then the caster sugar after those Miss Parker put in some water next she put a balloon on top and for this one we had to put next to the window in the sun. A couple minutes later it started inflating a little bit. These experiments were so fun.

Next I went to Mr Stewart and the science experiment that he was doing was called dancing raisins and I was curios about the name, but at the same time I was excited. So when we got to Mr Stewart we talked about what we were going to do.

We got into groups of three or four. My group was Cooper, Charlotte and Me. Mr Stewart gave us all the ingredients the ingredients were Soda/Sparkling Water or Lemonade, a plastic cup and raisins. Cooper , Charlotte and I had an idea, if we video it we could show it on this report so we recorded it on a mac.

We got the soda water and then we put the raisins in and then bouncing up and down and then Cooper showed the camera and then …

" Splash " The water spilt but the raisins stayed in the cup so we all shared them and had a little snack. This experiment was so fun.

Finally we are doing Whaea Nins experiment for Whaea Nins experiment we were doing The Incredible Hoop Glider and I was wondering what that was and then Whaea Nin showed us and it looked weird because it was just a straw and to paper circles attached to it, and apparently it was like a paper plane. Whaea Nin threw it and wow it was so cool I couldn't wait to do it.

So Whaea Nin started to talk about the materials to make The Incredible Hoop Glider and they were Paper , Scissors , A good straw , Sellotape or hot glue.

First, we had to get the paper and cut it into 3cm strips of paper then we and to fold it into a medium circle. Then we had to cut another 3cm strip but this time we folded it into a small circle.

After that some people used Sellotape and some people used Hot Glue to stick the circles onto the straws.

The big circle we have to stick at the back of the straw and at the front of the straw you gotta put the small circle. Stick the circles 2cm apart from the edge.

I loved doing those three science experiments that day and I learnt a thing or two.

My favorite topic was the fizz inflator because it was interesting how it took a long time for the yeast experiment  to  inflate the balloon and for the vinegar experiment it took a very quick time for the balloon to inflate and it made me think and stretched my brain.
